About Highland Park — The Suburb That Turned a Failed Amusement Park Into a Stage

Highland Park was incorporated as a city on March 11, 1869, built from the merger of two earlier lakefront settlements, St. John and Port Clinton — their names still mark local streets today. But the detail that separates Highland Park from most other North Shore suburbs isn’t its founding date, it’s what happened on a 36-acre lakefront property in 1904: a company called A.C. Frost & Co. opened Ravinia Park as an amusement park, complete with a baseball diamond and an electric fountain, built simply to give people a reason to ride its struggling electric railroad line out of the city.

The railroad went bankrupt. The park almost went with it. Instead, a group of Chicago businessmen bought Ravinia in 1911 and made music its permanent purpose — and by 1936, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra had adopted it as its official summer home, a residency that continues every summer to this day. Ravinia Festival is now recognized as North America’s oldest continuously operating outdoor music festival, drawing lawn-picnic crowds to the same ground where a bankrupt trolley company once tried to sell rides. The city’s residential streets carry their own quieter distinction: Highland Park has one of the largest concentrations of Prairie School architecture on the North Shore, including Frank Lloyd Wright’s Willits House and homes by Howard Van Doren Shaw and David Adler.

What You Get With Every Highland Park Booking

$59 Flat Rate, No Surge

One confirmed sedan price for any pickup address inside Highland Park, regardless of traffic, time of day, or exact street. Choosing an SUV, minivan, or black car instead of a sedan changes the price — the flat rate itself never moves with passenger count.

Car Seats Available

Add a car seat for $10 (limited availability — reserve it at booking, not last-minute). Unlike rideshare apps, we guarantee the seat when you book it. Illinois law governs child passenger safety under the Child Passenger Protection Act.

Authorized Terminal 5 Pickup

We’re authorized for direct curbside pickup at O’Hare Terminal 5, gates 5D or 5E, inner lane — something Uber and Lyft cannot do. Our driver tracks your flight, messages you on landing, and waits in the commercial lot; you reply with your vestibule number (e.g. “Vestibule 2C LL”) and we’re there in about 5–10 minutes.

Real-Time Tracking & Text Updates

Automatic texts 24 hours before pickup, 1 hour before, when your driver is en route, and when they arrive — each with a live map link, no app required (though we have one — see below).

Corporate & Executive Travel

North Shore commuters and Highland Park businesses can set up a billed corporate account for recurring airport travel — see our corporate taxi service page for details.

Flexible Payment, Fair Cancellation

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it true Ravinia Festival started out as a failed amusement park?

Yes — it opened in 1904 as A.C. Frost & Co.’s Ravinia Park, built to drive ridership on an electric railroad. When the railroad went bankrupt, Chicago businessmen bought the property in 1911 and shifted its focus permanently to music, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra has spent its summers there since 1936.

Does the $59 rate change depending on which part of Highland Park I’m in?

No — $59 is the flat sedan rate for any pickup within Highland Park city limits, regardless of the exact address. It does change if you choose an SUV, minivan, or black car instead of a sedan.

How long does the drive from Highland Park to O’Hare usually take?

Published estimates put it at roughly 20 miles and 30–45 minutes under typical conditions, longer during weekday rush hour, Ravinia concert nights, or winter weather.

Can I book a car seat for a flight out of Highland Park?

Yes, for $10 extra, though availability is limited — reserve it when you book rather than asking last minute.

Do you also serve Highwood, Lake Forest, or Deerfield?

Yes — we run flat-rate service across this part of the North Shore, including Highwood, Lake Forest, Deerfield, Bannockburn, and Lake Bluff, each priced separately from Highland Park.

Are you authorized to pick up directly at O’Hare’s Terminal 5?

Yes. O’Hare Airport Taxi LLC is authorized for direct Terminal 5 pickups, something Uber and Lyft cannot do. Our drivers wait at gates 5D or 5E, inner lane, and track your flight so they’re ready when you land.
